A Thought-Provoking Distinction Between Being Religious And Being Spiritual

“A religious person will do what he is told, no matter what is right. In contrast, a spiritual person will do what is right, no matter what he is told,” refers to the distinction between behaving with an independent sense of morality and integrity and mindlessly adhering to religious doctrine.

A religious person may rigorously follow the doctrine and tenets of their faith, even if doing so contradicts their moral convictions. On the other hand, the spiritual person is led by an inner sense of knowledge and compassion and will put doing what is right above all else, even if it goes against accepted religious teaching.

Romans 2:29, which reads, “But a person is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code,” lends credence to this notion. According to this scripture, internal spiritual development and honesty of heart are more important than outward compliance with religious rules and commandments.

It is not surprising that, despite the religious beliefs of the Pharisees, Jesus spoke about what was right regarding the Sabbath. Again , when the Pharisees reported an adulterous woman to him, Jesus Christ also demonstrated this sense of spirituality.

it’s clear that Jesus emphasized compassion and moral integrity over strict adherence to the law. This suggests that spirituality often prioritizes love, kindness, and understanding, which might not always align with rigid interpretations of religious doctrine.

Many people resonate with the idea that true morality comes from within, rather than simply following rules without understanding their purpose.

Essentially, the source of authority and instruction is what separates being spiritual from being religious. A religious person might only look to outside sources for direction, such as religious leaders or scriptures, whereas a spiritual person looks within themselves for insight via reflection, empathy, and a close relationship with their own conscience and moral values.

Thanks for reading. Be blessed mightily of God. Shalom and Life to you dear.
