“You can’t tell who’s swimming naked until the tide goes out,” aptly captures how stability and genuine character are only shown during difficult circumstances. Everyone seems safe and prosperous when the tide is high. However, people who were living beyond their means or depending on appearances are abruptly left vulnerable when the tide turns. This statement is a warning against striving to impress people and borrowing to keep up a successful appearance.
To “keep up with the Joneses”, many people feel compelled to spend more than they can afford in order to appear wealthy or influential. This façade appears sustainable during prosperous times, when social comparisons are favourable and money is consistent. However, when challenging situations arise, the truth of fragile foundations becomes apparent. When you borrow to give yourself a false sense of achievement, you just make yourself more vulnerable, and when the tide turns, you can’t hide the truth.
The Bible warns against such empty pursuits, by emphasizing the importance of wisdom and integrity. Proverbs 21:20 says, “The wise store up choice food and olive oil, but fools gulp theirs down.” This verse reminds us that living with foresight and prudence—saving and living within our means—builds true security. Living to please others or chasing after temporary approval can lead to ruin, but steady, careful living leads to lasting peace.
Ultimately, the metaphor encourages us to build lives grounded in authenticity and wise stewardship rather than appearances. True strength and success are revealed not when the tide is high and life feels easy, but when challenges expose what lies beneath.
