Beware of Divination and Sorcery in the Church*
The Bible warns against engaging in divination and sorcery, as it is considered an abomination to the Lord. Those who practice such things are defiled and detestable in the eyes of God.
By seeking guidance from mediums, spiritists, or engaging in witchcraft, one is turning away from the true path of righteousness and faith in God. It is important to stay true to the teachings of the Bible and avoid any practices that go against God’s will. Here are some Bible scriptures that address divination and sorcery:
1. Leviticus 19:31: “Do not turn to mediums or seek out spiritists, for you will be defiled by them. I am the Lord your God.”
2. Deuteronomy 18:10–12: Let no one be among you who sacrifices their son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets om, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist, or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord.”
3. Galatians 5:19–21: “The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity, and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions, and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this do not inherit from God.”
4. Acts 16:16–18: This passage tells the story of Paul casting out a spirit of divination from a slave girl.
These scriptures emphasise the importance of avoiding practices related to divination and sorcery, as they are considered sinful and against the teachings of the Bible.
Symptoms of divination and sorcery in a church can vary, but some signs to look out for may include:
1. unexplained spiritual manifestations or occurrences during church services.
2. Members of the congregation expressing feelings of being under a spiritual influence or control.
3. Leaders or individuals within the church claiming to have supernatural powers or abilities.
4. Manipulative or controlling behaviour from church leaders.
5. Divisiveness within the congregation, with factions forming based on beliefs or practices related to divination or sorcery.
6. Reports of unusual rituals or practices taking place within the church.
7. A focus on seeking guidance or answers through supernatural means rather than through traditional religious teachings. These are just a few potential signs that could indicate the presence of divination and sorcery in a church. It’s important to address any concerns or suspicions with church leadership and seek guidance from a trusted spiritual advisor.
Paul’s praise of the Berean Christians can be found in Acts 17:11. In this passage, Paul applauds the Bereans for being more noble or fair-minded than the Thessalonians because they eagerly received the message of the gospel and examined the Scriptures daily to see if what was being said was true.
This shows their readiness to learn and search for the truth, which earned them praise from Paul. “Then the brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea. When they arrived, they went into the synagogue of the Jews. These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so.” Acts 17:10-11 NKJV
