When you dedicate your life to helping others, amazing things happen. The Bible is full of incredible things that happen when you make serving others your primary focus. Mark 10:45 (NIV) quotes Jesus Christ, the highest example of selfless service, as saying, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
We connect with God’s heart and feel the transformational power of love when we make serving others our first priority. “You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free,” says an encouraging passage in Galatians 5:13 (NIV). But instead of using your freedom to gratify your desires, treat one another with humility and love.” This verse emphasizes that meeting the needs of others comes before our own in order to truly be free.
The following passage from Matthew 25:35–40 (NIV) quotes Jesus on the value of serving others: “Because you fed my hunger, satisfied my thirst, clothed me when I was sick, visited me in prison, and were strangers to me. I genuinely tell you that you did for me whatever you did for even the smallest of my brothers and sisters.” This verse focuses on the idea that serving people with kindness and compassion is really serving God.
Making serving others the center of our lives changes us on the inside as well as the people we assist. “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit,” says Philippians 2:3–4 (NIV). Instead, put the needs of others above your own with humility and consider each other’s interests above your own. “Giving others’ needs top priority helps us develop humility, empathy, and a heart that is a reflection of Christ’s love.
Finally, biblical teachings provide credence to the idea that amazing things happen when you make serving others the center of your existence. Serving others provides us freedom, enables us to experience the transformative power of love, and puts us in alignment with God’s heart. As we serve and love those around us without expecting anything in return, let us endeavour to emulate Jesus.
